SANDISK CELEBRATED 25 YEARS OF FLASH MEMORY
SanDisk Corp. said Aug. 20 the 25th anniversary of the existence of the very important at the present time technology - flash memory used literally everywhere - in smartphones, tablets, thin laptops, data centers, and a variety of other electronic devices.
Over the past two decades, as the SanDisk, the capacity of flash memory has grown in 30,000 times, and the cost has dropped to 50,000 times. SanDisk#39;s first product was a 20 MB solid state drive and sold for $ 1,000 in 1991, but today the same amount costs only 2 cents. With such a rapid growth of flash memory has become a catalyst for the industry in such areas as mobile electronics, distribution of digital content.
According to IDC, this year, individual users will create 2.7 zettabytes of digital content in the form of movies, music, documents and other data - that#39;s 20 times more than that of 2005. But this is only the beginning - just three years the amount of digital content, according to analysts, will increase almost three-fold to 8 zettabytes. Therefore, the demand for increasing storage volume will not decrease, and the flash memory will continue to spread thanks to a boom of smartphones, tablets and compact mobile PCs.
